Family and Consumer Sciences Scholarship Opportunity

The Virginia FCCLA Leadership Foundation is pleased to offer a $1,000 scholarship to current juniors, seniors, first-year graduate students, or career-switchers enrolled at a Virginia college or university. The focus of the scholarship is for students pursuing a degree in Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) or a related field, with the intention of becoming an FCS teacher and FCCLA adviser.


Many students entering Family & Consumer Sciences Education will often major in a related FCS content area and will then pick up the teaching endorsement.

Related FCS majors for this scholarship include:

  • Child Development and Parenting
  • Culinary Arts
  • Early Childhood Education and Services and Pre-K Education
  • Economics and Personal Finance
  • Education – Grades 6-12
  • Family and Consumer Sciences Education
  • Family and Human Services
  • Family Relations
  • Fashion Design
  • Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation
  • Housing and Interior Design
  • Individual Development
  • Nutrition and Wellness/Dietetics

Students who are not planning to enter FCS teaching at the middle or high school level should not apply.

Graduate Teaching Professional Development

Are you a graduate student in a teaching role? This semester, there are two professional development opportunities to enhance your skills as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), Graduate Lecturer (GL), or postdoc scholar. Read below to find out more about the Graduate Teaching Academy starting on Friday, 9/8, and the Graduate Teaching Training in MasonLeaps! 


Graduate Teaching Academy 

The Graduate Teaching Academy encourages participants to connect their scholarly activities with career and professional training centered on skill development. With face-to-face meetings and online modules, students will have opportunities to work with peers from different disciplines, building a community of support and development as they gain practical skills. Participants will work to create challenging and stimulating learning environments, while attending growth-based trainings providing personal enhancement.  

Through a series of monthly face-to-face meetings, students will learn about communication styles in the classroom, assignment design, consideration for classroom activities in online classroom environments and climate, and have access to online modules on grading, assessments, and providing student feedback, and much more. Sessions start on Friday, 9/8, so register now!

Graduate Teaching Training 

The new Graduate Teaching Training has launched in MasonLeaps! This online training module serves to introduce appropriate and relevant instructional support and resources, including pragmatic considerations and tools for graduate teaching assistants, graduate lecturers, and postdocs across Mason’s campuses.  

Success as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), Graduate Lecturer (GL), or postdoc scholar depends on creating a welcoming, well-resourced learning environment. The Graduate Teaching Training, fitting within a bigger picture of graduate preparation at Mason, serves to elevate the overall student experience in the classroom. Register in MasonLeaps!

Now Recruiting CEHD Student Success Advisory Board Members

Now recruiting CEHD Student Success Advisory Board members! Our application deadline has been extended through: Wednesday, October 4, 2023

The CEHD Student Success Team believes that a successful student is one who is informed, engaged, and present.  

Those selected as members of the CEHD Student Success Advisory Board will be tasked with thoughtfully carrying out this “student success philosophy” while serving as representatives for the College and providing faculty and staff with insight into the needs of the CEHD student body. Advisory Board members should demonstrate strong leadership skills to support them in fulfilling the diverse duties of the role such as assisting with CEHD signature events and functions, creating social media content, and planning service or social events for the College. 

Students that are selected will be given access to leadership training and professional development opportunities, CEHD swag, and graduation perks.

Interested in being a member of the CEHD Student Success Advisory Board? If so, this is your opportunity to stand out amongst peers while adding valuable experience to your resume and networking with CEHD faculty and staff.

Expectations: 

Attend monthly CEHD Student Success Advisory Board meetings 

Collaborate with other members to create social media content such as, “Day in the Life” content, Instagram Story takeovers, posts on the Student Success Blog, and CEHD faculty/staff interviews 

Attend and provide support for at least 2 CEHD signature events per semester 

  • Fall semester – 2 events 
  • Spring semester – CEHD Student Research Symposium (April 25, 2024, 6-8 PM) + 1 additional event 

Help facilitate RLC events as needed 

Plan one college-wide social or service event per semester 

Qualifications: 
  • Demonstrate pride for CEHD and Mason 
  • Have, and maintain, a GPA of 3.0 or higher 
  • No active Student Conduct, Academic Integrity, or disciplinary violations 
  • Demonstrate reliability, responsibility, and initiative 
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people 
  • A letter of recommendation from a CEHD faculty or staff member is preferred, but not required

This two-year fellowship was established to attract to federal services outstanding individuals who have a clear interest in, and commitment to excellence in, the leadership and management of public policies and programs. Now Hiring AMP Mentors for Fall 2023

The Mason Early Identification Program (EIP) and Academic Mentoring Program (AMP) are looking for undergraduate or graduate students who are interested in working with the middle and high school student populations, tutoring, mentoring, and giving back to the Northern Virginia community for the Fall 2023 semester. Learn more about this AMP Mentor position below, and apply on Mason360 by August 27, 2023 (Priority Application Deadline) or September 4, 2023 (General Application Deadline). 


About AMP Mentors: 

The AMP Mentors will play an integral role in supporting the delivery of academic supports needed for academic and personal success at over 25 different tutoring sites. These supports comprise of academic coaching, academic assistance, and ultimately helping EIP students realize their academic potential. AMP Mentors will report directly to the Assistant Director and Associate Director at EIP. This will be an in-person position for Fall 2023 with starting pay of $14/hour.

Note: transportation to sites is provided for those who do not have their own transportation. 


Qualifications: 
  • Undergraduate/Graduate students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 
  • Able to provide academic assistance to students in English, Math, Science, History, and/or other subjects 
  • Able to work with minors and pass a Mason background check in addition to county/school background checks
